This regional conference took place in Mombasa, Kenya from May 16th to May 20th, 2022. It was held alongside the East Africa Association of Prosecutors to provide an opportunity for members of the IAP and EAAP to network.

The forum brought together Prosecutors General, Attorneys General and Directors of Public Prosecutions to strengthen regional and international cooperation with regards to the investigation and prosecution of complex transnational organized crimes.

The theme of the conference was “Effective Mechanisms to Respond to Emerging Crimes and Transnational Organized Crime in Africa: Country Experiences and Challenges” which emphasizes the role of national, regional and international Prosecution Authorities in the investigation and Prosecution of transnational organized crimes.

The Director of Public Prosecutions for Mauritius, Satyajit Boolell who is also the Vice-president of the International Association of Prosecutors in charge of Africa and the Indian Ocean Regions was present during the conference. During his speech, he lingered on the best practices adopted by Kenya to protect its democracy.  Kenya’s constitution establishes the rule of law and the separation of powers and guarantees the independence of both the judiciary and the office of the DPP, said Satyajit Boolell. These two institutions are both shielded from any external influence in the discharge of their duties, he adds.

Furthermore, Satyajit Boolell explained that his aim and objectives as DPP of Mauritius and Vice-president of the IAP is to promote effective, fair and impartial prosecution of criminal offences. The respect for the rule of law, the promotion of human rights and International Corporation which makes us less vulnerable and better equipped to fight crime, he added.
